The Compton Heights Concert Band held auditions for membership.

  • The Compton Heights Concert Band featured enjoyable Sousa-style program of marches, Broadway show tunes, symphonic transcriptions, contemporary band selections, and internationally acclaimed guest artists. Musicians were expected to attend 80% of the rehearsals and concerts. The Band was most noted for its summer concert series Sunday Serenades and Musical Mondays in Francis Park and Tower Grove Park. The Band will also performed a special Labor Day concert and Memorial Day in Tower Grove Park. In the winter, the Band performed its Holiday Pops concert at Powell Hall.


    Under the direction of professional Conductor, Edward Dolbashian, the Compton Heights Concert Band was active year round. The Band was funded by corporate and public grants, sponsorships, the Bandwagon citizen support group and the band's weekly charity bingo held at Bandwagon Hall, 2151 Lemay Ferry Road, St. Louis, Missouri, 63125. Musicians also volunteered at the Band's charity benefit bingo for community service.

    Preparation for an audition included presenting two pieces that demonstrated intonation, rhythmic ability, musicality, and technique. The prepared selections did not have to be very long or difficult. Scales and sightreading were also part of an audition.

    Membership included high school age through senior citizens from all walks of life, all dedicated to presenting programs for the public. High School students were also encouraged to Audition for the Band's SousaU Scholarship program which consisted of:
    An increasing college scholarship for every year of membership in the Compton Heights Concert Band.
    The 4-year scholarships were based on full membership years in the Compton Heights Band, starting with earning a scholarship for $500 per year in college for being a member 1 year in the Band; $750 per year in college - for two years; $1,000 per year in college - for 3 years; and $1,250 per year in college - for 4 years.
    We also offered private Music Lessons with a teacher of their choice during high school.
    The program served over 100 musicians extremely well over its 12-year history.
    13th Annual College Scholarship Competition - the Final year of the program. However, all scholarships earned are currently being honored, even though the Band is closing its doors after 45 years.
